While many believe that revitalizing the Los Angeles River carries promise to transform the whole region, the specifics of it have been stymied by a civic imagination untethered by the realities of the region’s flood protection needs. For example, modelling shows that one of the most popular revitalization idea— “ripping up” the concrete and “restoring” the river—would result in massive flooding. On the other hand, the more engineering and other requirements stifle our civic imagination, the more we need to empower imagination and communication to find new solutions. The question remains: can we engage our civic imagination in a meaningful dialogue with the river’s complex engineering functions? 
In answer to this challenge, we have initiated the Los Angeles River Integrated Design Lab. The “lab” will build capacity to design the LA River channel and similar “landscape infrastructure” through the close cooperation of engineering, landscape architecture, and communities. It will do so by creating a river design interface that bridges between the practices of community design, landscape architecture, and hydraulic engineering to suggest new vetted designs for the LA River channel. The ultimate goal is to protype design processes for landscape infrastructure that are at once imaginative, inclusive, and technically informed.

Additionally, the project’s original design research and methodological contributions should yield significant academic scholarship in engineering, landscape architecture, and mixed reality.

Designing the new Owens Lake dust controls requires a marriage of the incommensurable. The objective prisms of engineering and ecology must answer to the seeming frivolity of our subjective aesthetics, as represented by landscape architecture. This is not an unprecedented collaboration, but the compositional scale and consequence of Owens Lake challenge the ways in which engineering and landscape architecture generally join forces. A suitably facile integration requires a difficult hybrid situational awareness: where on the vast lake (and its many futures) are the best intersections of subjective and objective interests? How do the architectures of aesthetic experience align with the lake’s operational concerns and economies?

		<description>“Greetings from Owens Lake”


	To help cultivate a public imagination for Owens Lake, part of the Rapid Landscape Prototyping Machine interface was refitted to operate within a custom stand-up “arcade” machine. Everyday users can select between a variety of vacuum-formed sand models, representing possible dust control designs, and slide them onto the game tabletop. After the digital model is loaded, they can use buttons and a joystick to dress them with a selection of dust control technologies, modulate water use, and control experiential parameters, such as time of day and viewer position. Users are motivated to play by an instant postgame reward of a custom souvenir postcard printed with one of their design configurations.

	This project undertakes designing, building, and deploying a custom rapid landscape prototyping machine to improve the design of dust mitigation landscapes at the Owens Lake near Lone Pine, California. 

Gradually desiccated by the diversion of water into 1914 Los Angeles Aqueduct the ~108 sq. mile Owens Lake became the single greatest source of deleterious PM10 air particulate pollution. &#38;nbsp;After years of litigation, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) was mandated to manage this hazard and has built dust control landscapes costing over 1 billion dollars with annual potable water expenditures equal to the needs of the city of San Francisco. Because the project must abide by the State’s Public Trust Doctrine the utility has found it difficult to find water efficient ways to control dust, while still providing public values.

The rapid landscape prototyping machine addresses this complex and timely design challenge. Hybridizing engineering physical modeling techniques, robotic technology, digital projection, and 3D scanning the machine creates a new multi-sensory design platform to rigorously address the design issues present on the alkali lake. The machine creates a common ground where designers, engineers, and the public can fluidly engage in the multiple concerns inherent to the infrastructure. The designs developed with this machine are presented within an interactive multi-media landscape “player” that employs 21st century interactive pictorial representations to immerse users in the on-going search for resource efficient public values for the lake.

Recovering the traditions of Rome in crafting elegant movement, physically, visually, and spiritually with a recuperation of the Picturesque ideas of mixture, power and wholeness, Feast of the Picturesque, Act X, is a interventions to awaken the river in the citys’ conciousness. Placed at the end of an eon of Tevere “acts,” an animated architecture model stages a new and antique composition of space, time and movement. At minimum, the aim is to create easy transversal physical and visual links between the city fabric and River without disrupting the fundamental modern infrastructure of the levee or the Lungotevere.

All exhibited photos&#38;nbsp;were stamped with number, time and position – marked by memory, attention, and&#38;nbsp;references to the Picturesque lineage of the subject – and positioned onto 7 scrolls.

Here “Mixture” refers to Uvedale Price’s definition of the “Picturesque” as an&#38;nbsp;aesthetic of appealingly wild – at times uncomfortable – groupings and&#38;nbsp;imbrications of different, possibly irreconcilable, things, including uncertainty,&#38;nbsp;decay, and disparate cultural artifacts. Avoiding its use here acknowledges that the&#38;nbsp;word Picturesque – meant by Price to describe an aesthetic cateogory daring in its&#38;nbsp;rambunctious middle-ness – may never fully be recuperated from its retrograde&#38;nbsp;associations with fixed, stereotypical, images of 17th and 18th century English and Italian landscapes.

Design of the Los Angeles River, and other regional water flood control structures, is highly restricted due to challenging hydraulic requirements and the health and safety issues embedded in such systems. In order to understand and capitalize on the often small window of opportunity within these infrastructures a design process must work within a rich representation of critical site conditions. In collaboration with civil engineers, I developed a landscape design methodology that integrates&#38;nbsp; physical hydraulic modeling into a landscape design process. This allows designers to respond to specific fluvial opportunities and constraints and seek transformative, yet viable, designs.&#38;nbsp; This work is done with funding and collaboration with the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering as well as assistance from USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

River LAndingThough seasonally unsafe, the banks of the LA River represent one of the cities greatest remaining unoccupied open spaces. River LAnding is a prototype for safe, summer-long park installations on the banks of the river.&#38;nbsp; The underlying purpose is to organically develop a culture of use prior to the river’s permanent re-design by the Army Corps of Engineers. The bottom-up project subverts existing legal restrictions to accessing the channel by making a “movie” and taking advantage of the tradition of relatively lax film permitting (Grease, Terminator, Them!, etc.) By employing the production tools of Hollywood to create a full-scale prototype and film the project seeks to jump-start a lively culture of riverbank inhabitation to balance the upcoming project focused on river “restoration” and habitat.

		<description>Studies in Natural Geometries

Euclidean geometry can describe most architecture, but it fails to effectively describe the natural forms of landscapes; a task best left to the relatively novel geometric system of&#38;nbsp; fractals. However, while landscape architecture&#38;nbsp; has an undeniable connection to natural geometries, practice often reveals a&#38;nbsp; superficial understanding of their form. &#38;nbsp;


Based upon research into fractal geometries, this project employs surveying tools (including aerial photography devices) to build and record full-scale drawings and other representations of natural forms. Surveying fractal forms with contours and other lines celebrates the gaps and opportunities of each descriptive system and geometry and allows for further critical representations. Underlying the work is a desire to re-formulate traditions of studying natural landscapes for design&#38;nbsp; inspiration and an interest in seeking new primary landscape sources, such as the eccentric landscape geometries of the Owens Valley “wunderkammer”.
